Is this a code for something? Or maybe the owner of it has a bad memory so it’s to remind them they’re in Manchester. Which would also explain why the word isn’t finished. Come to think it, they won’t even recall losing this note, so this post is useless.

Or a hitchhiker's sign for someone who didn't want to go all the way to Manchester, just half the way.
That's a really good suggestion. Looks like hitchhiker's are approaching their task more creatively these days.
I'd say its the influence of texting - exam papers have been written like this, and its filtered through the system to hitchhikers.
